Chapter Forty

ORAIL

My heart is changing, softening in me,

Like fruit set out too long, it starts to leak.

Have I become what they want me to be?

But gods are not the ones who set to wreak

This havoc on my soul; it is Áila.

So I stand by and let her enact their

Vengeance, heedless of what she does, while a

Storm rages inside of me like warfare.

Do I try to thwart Yslet, dig in claws

And maintain my life as an enemy

To gods and men, or give all that I was

To the melting power of this alchemy?

For I cannot do both. My resistance

Must propel the end of love’s existence.

The choice is an agony inside me,

Twisting guts, a predator I perceive.

This long-held feud with the gods is my key

To victory, the last trick up my sleeve

In a gamble where they hold all the cards.

If I convince them they’re wrong, that love has

No sway over me, they’ll call off the guards,

Perhaps, give up, let me go free. Whereas

If I show them I can love, I may keep

Áila, but lose the only thing I have

Left of myself, though it’s bruised and asleep:

My pride. Yet there’s a loss that has no salve.

Yslet has held my chains through forms and years

But the loss of Áila now drives my fears.
